Functional and stylish pool fencing to suit your home - from the North Shore to South Auckland

If you are planning on installing a new swimming pool, you need to be aware that you will also be required to install pool fencing. But a swimming pool fence doesn’t have to be simply functional. Done properly, a pool fence or glass balustrade can be a stylish addition to your outdoor area.

Swimming pool fences are now covered under the Building Act 2004 and regulations around restricting access to pools have been tightened. Access to residential pools for children under-5 must be restricted if the water in the pool is 40cm or more deep, including indoor pools, kitset pools, and inflatable pools. Pool fencing must also now be inspected every three years by the Auckland Council.

Warwick Price Landscaping offers a range of pool fencing options for homes on the North Shore or greater Auckland area. Whether you are looking for an upmarket frameless glass pool fence, timber fence, or aluminium pool fencing, our team can help. Contact us to discuss pool fencing and/or swimming pool design to ensure your pool area blends seamlessly with its surroundings and truly adds value to your property.

Regulations for pool fencing in Auckland

The fenced area must cover the immediate area around the pool and not include any playground equipment, vehicle or pedestrian access or anything not related to the pool. Nothing that a child could climb on must be in the immediate area outside the fencing. You can use existing fencing or buildings as part of your pool fence as long as they are secure and any doors or gates leading to the pool are self closing.

These regulations apply no matter what type of pool fencing you install, whether you choose galvanised pool fencing or glass pool fencing. Inspections must be carried out when the fencing is installed and regularly thereafter.
  • All pool area fencing is required to be at least 1.2 metres above the ground.
  • Fences need to have a gap between the bottom of the fence and ground level, no more than 100mm.
  • Pool fencing needs to have gates/doors that open outwards away from the pool area.
  • All gates that are used alongside pool fencing or surrounding pool areas are required to be self closing.
  • Fences must be fitted with a latching device that is at least 1.5m above the ground if it is accessible outside the barrier or 1.2m if inside the barrier.

Fencing options include:

  • Architectural balustrades
  • Glass balustrades and fencing
  • Frameless glass balustrades
  • Semi-frameless balustrades
  • Timber fencing
  • Decking balustrades
  • Aluminium balustrades and fencing
